Rock Camp Video Sums Up #GrrrlsOnFiLMU

I have lots of things to say about the incredible experience that many of us had at Grrrls on Film last weekend. But this video, filmed by the Music Video Project of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camps for Girls LA at their GOF booth on Sunday, pretty much sums it up.

Grrrls on Stage and Tables

Grrrls on Film this weekend will culminate not just with Grrrls on Stage — bands, spoken word, DJs, host Allison Wolfe — but also Grrrls at Tables. Numerous individuals and organizations will be offering their services and wares in a fair on the Alumni Mall of Loyola Marymount University. The musical guests are Kim and the Created, Colleen Green and Peach Kelli Pop. Original Runaways lyricist Kari Krome will share some choice words, as will LMU faculty Sarah Maclay and Alicia Partnoy and student Kaelyn Sabal-Wilson. And KXLU DJs Mukta Mohan, McAllister, and Taylor 2000 will spin discs.

You will be able to buy clothes, including Grrrls on Film T-shirts (proceeds go to scholarships for LMU students), make fanzines at the table sponsored by the William H. Hannon Library, learn bike repair with the Ovarian Psychos, and even make a video at a booth sponsored by the Music Video Program of Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles. We’ll have three rock camps on the mall: Chicas Rockeras and RC OC too. And two all-female roller derby teams: Los Angeles Derby Dolls and Angel City Derby Girls.

Additional participants: Marians, Mcpheeters, Feminist Library on Wheels, Geek Girl Society, An Unexpected Hobby, Honey Power DJ Collective, KXLU, the LMU Committee on the Status of Women,  LMU SFTV grad programs, Fanboy Comics, Old Friends Vintage, and Razorcake magazine. Exene, Allison, and Evelyn

Why do we keep reinventing the wheel? How come every generation of women musicians has to address all over again the confrontation between expression and exploitation, as if a hundred women haven’t gone before them? These were some of the questions raised last night at Queens of Noise: Music, Feminism, and Punk: Then and Now, the Aloud event at the Los Angeles Central Library that I hosted with amazing extra-special guests Exene Cervenka and Allison Wolfe.

Apologies to those who were not able to get in to “the feminist meeting,” as one would-be attendee described the event (according to a colleague). The podcast will be posted next week — and goddess, I hope it goes viral. Of course I’m biased, but, led by an Exene on fire, we addressed crucial issues of the value of and need for women to make themselves heard, not just seen. Riot Grrrl, Rock Camp for Girls, Pussy Riot, the Runaways, X, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Kathleen Hanna, Bratmobile, mentoring, self-esteem, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, books, history, documentation, activism, etc. — these were just some of the issues and topics we addressed in a wide-ranging, cross-generational conversation. The audience asked sharp questions. And Exene sang a song. It was an EPIC night.
