Cycle of Life

Thing I’m glad I saw this morning while kayaking in the Port of Los Angeles: herons nesting in a tree, one bringing food to the other.

Thing I’m sorry I saw: Dead whale washed up next to the Cabrillo Youth Center, being cut into pieces.

New Year's in Pedro

We started the new year by jumping in the water. The Cabrillo Polar Bear Club is a decades-old San Pedro tradition. Granted, it was a balmy 70 degrees out and the water was only 58 degrees cold — we weren’t plunging into a hole cut in the ice, like some PBCs do. Still, the Pacific was cold enough to make Cole start crying. The event draws out the local characters, like these Nacho Libre wannabes:

For New Year’s Eve, we rung in 2010 at the Korean Bell, hearing our neighborhood peace monument ring for the first time since we moved here. I’m sorry to say my group played the role of drunk whiteys. Here’s to a brave new year!
