Who Cares About the Cock Rock Hall?

My Longreads piece on the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame and other perpetrators of gender inequity, “The Manhandling of Rock’n’Roll History,” seems to have hit a chord (so to speak). Future Rock Legends, THE watchdog site for the Rock Hall, published an article about it. And I did a really fun interview with Who Cares About the Rock Hall?, a podcast by comedians Joe Kwaczala and Kristen Studard.

  1. The first 5 of your inductees I think are great. Beyond that, I’m not sure. If we induct L7, we kinda need to induct The Screaming Trees, no? If we’re truly working towards being gender neutral. To me more accomplished (and frankly successful) artists would be Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, and even Sarah McLachlan, with Amos really being the only lock.
Speaking as an alt-rock/new wave loving white dude, it’s been comical to watch the Rock Hall ignore any band from Talking Heads to Nirvana, essentially. Sure, The Cars just got in, and The Cure this year, but there was that infamous quote by one of the selectors decrying “dudes who wore eyeliner” or some such. New Order/Joy Division, Smiths, Depeche Mode are all stone code locks, but all of the macho posturing keeping them out also embraces another tool: the guitar. Electronic music forms the backbone of literally everything save Country nowadays…so where the hell is Kraftwerk?
